4 Casual Fall Outfits for 2026 You Can Copy With Clothes You Already Own

First cold morning of the week, standing in front of my closet in a t-shirt and sweatpants, and the question comes fast: what am I actually supposed to wear in September? This year I stopped staring at my hangers and started with four simple formulas. They’re the ones I keep coming back to, the ones that work in a real city wardrobe with a real budget.

Flat lay of green cardigan, white tee and jeans

Every formula below is built from basics you probably already own. Swap a color, swap a piece, make it yours. The outfit is the shape, not the exact item.

A note on sizing so the recommendations actually mean something: I’m 5’6″, usually S/M or 6 in clothes, and 8.5 to 9 in shoes.

1. White tee + green cardigan + medium wash jeans

Fall outfit formula with white tee and green cardigan

This particular green is everywhere this fall, and honestly? I’m not mad about it. It’s a warm, wearable shade that doesn’t scream “trend.” Build the outfit on basics — white tee, medium wash jeans — and the cardigan is where you get to play. Cherry red, bright blue, burgundy: all in season, all work the same formula.

I keep a silk scarf in my bag for exactly this kind of base outfit. It’s an easy way to make a plain tee-and-jeans look feel intentional. But the outfit stands fine without it. Sometimes the simplest version is the one that wins the morning rush.

Two tweaks I’ve been doing lately. Button the cardigan all the way up and wear it like a pullover, with the white tee peeking out at the hem. It adds a little dimension, and you can drop the layer when the afternoon warms up. Second: a short-sleeve sweater is doing a lot of heavy duty in my closet this fall, because my mornings are cool and my afternoons are not. One fit note — I don’t love a short-sleeve sweater with barrel-leg jeans, so I pair it with wide-leg jeans instead.

2. Burgundy print top + dark wash jeans

Let’s be honest: burgundy is a fall color. Is it ever not a fall color? I’ve never met a season that said no. The good news is that a good burgundy piece is worth keeping for many autumns, not just this one.

Pair a burgundy print top with dark wash jeans and you’ve got a super simple everyday fall outfit. Done. I’m showing it with a long-sleeve floral top, but if you want to keep it more casual, a printed t-shirt works the exact same way. The formula doesn’t care about sleeve length.

3. Color sweater + washed black jeans

Washed black jeans are my answer for when I’m tired of blue denim. They look great with the fun colors that are popular right now, and they keep the outfit feeling sharp without any effort.

I paired mine with a cobalt blue sweater. That blue really pops against the washed black denim — it’s the kind of combination that reads as put-together even when everything else is on autopilot. Cherry red does the same job if blue isn’t your color. Honestly, use whatever color you already own and love. That’s the beauty of this formula: the shape works regardless of which color you choose.

4. Black top + burgundy pants

Here’s burgundy on the bottom. Black top, burgundy pants, black jacket. The burgundy takes it out of all-black territory, but everything still comes together in under two minutes. If you carry most of your weight below the waist, this is your friend — the pants do the interest, the top disappears.

Fair warning: for a fully casual day, this leans a little dressy for me. Three ways I’d tone it down. Swap the pants for burgundy jeans — instant casual. Keep the pants, put a t-shirt on top instead of the black top. Done. And trade the blazer for a utility jacket or a cardigan. If burgundy pants aren’t your thing, run the formula with any colored pants: colored pants + black top + black layer. Easy.

Why formulas beat a full wardrobe overhaul

I’ll be straight with you: I do not want to think about what to wear in the morning. There are a million other things fighting for my brain before my coffee finishes brewing, and the outfit is not one of them. What I do want is to feel pulled together, to actually wear the clothes I already spent money on instead of reaching for the same five things, and to look current without shopping every single week.

A formula gets you all three. You already know which pieces go together, so getting dressed takes seconds. You wear what you own, which means your money does its job. And the season’s colors slip in through one or two pieces, not a full closet reset.

If you want a bigger library of ready-made looks, I put together my own fall outfit guide — a wardrobe plan, a six-week outfit calendar, and a shopping guide for finding the pieces you’re actually missing. It’s linked below if it sounds useful.

Which of these four would you reach for first? Tell me in the comments — I’m genuinely curious whether the cardigan or the burgundy pants wins in your closet.

Quick answers

Do I need to buy anything new for these outfits?

No. Every one is built on basics you likely already own: a white tee, dark and medium wash jeans, a black top. The colored pieces — the green cardigan, the burgundy top, the blue sweater — are the only things worth hunting for, and any color you already have works in the same slot.

Which formula works for a small capsule wardrobe?

The white tee + cardigan + jeans one. It’s the most flexible: change the cardigan color, add a scarf, button it up or leave it open, and you get several different looks from the same three pieces.

Is burgundy really still in for fall 2026?

Yes — and it’s the kind of shade you’ll still be wearing next fall and the one after. A burgundy top and a burgundy pant are two of the most reusable pieces you can add this season.

A note from Ava: the green cardigan is the one I’m wearing the most this month. It goes with jeans, it goes with the scarf, it goes with the white tee I own in four colors. Sometimes the most interesting thing in your closet is the thing you’ve already had all along. My fall capsule wardrobe guide and my weekday outfits under $50 both pair well with these four formulas — they are on the site if you want to dig deeper.
