There’s a moment every single morning when you’re standing in front of your closet, staring at the same five outfits on rotation, and thinking: is this really all I have to work with? This has been me every fall. And the answer, I’ve finally figured out, is usually no — not because you need more clothes, but because you’re not using what’s in the jewelry box and on the shelf by the door.
The same jeans and a plain white top can look like a completely different person depending on the shoes, bag, and jewelry on top. Today I’m going to show you exactly how — and what’s actually in my own rotation to do it.

Quick sizing note so you can shop the same way I do: I’m 5’6″, I wear a size 6 in most things (I wear a size 4 in the pants in the photos below), and I’m between a size 8.5 and 9 in shoes.
Two ways accessories change an outfit
You’ve probably heard that accessories can make or break an outfit. Honestly? It’s true — and there are two separate levels to it.
Level one: accessories make an outfit look finished
At the most basic level, accessories are what take an outfit from “fine” to actually put-together. The clothes did their job; the jewelry and bag are the bow on the gift that makes the whole thing look intentional.
It’s the difference between an outfit that’s okay on its own and one that feels complete. Small pieces, outsized effect.
Level two: accessories change the whole vibe
Here’s the part I think most people miss. Beyond finishing an outfit, you can use accessories to steer the entire direction of a look. The exact same sweater and jeans can go from laid-back and earthy to soft and romantic to a little edgy — without changing a single piece of clothing.
That’s where you get the real mileage out of a wardrobe. So let’s do the demo.
One sweater, one pair of jeans, four different outfits
We’re starting with the most basic outfit in the closet: a plain white sweater and a pair of jeans. Those two pieces stay exactly the same for every look below. Only the accessories move.

Outfit one: warm and earthy
First up, brown flats, a textured brown bag, and a colorful beaded necklace. The warm tones, the texture, the beads — suddenly the outfit feels relaxed and a little bohemian. Same clothes, totally different energy.

Outfit two: softer and more delicate
Now I swap in cream loafers, a blush bag, pearl jewelry, and a silky scarf. No earthy, bohemian energy here — this version reads soft, romantic, and polished, even though the sweater and jeans never moved.
Outfit three: sharper and edgier
This time: a black bag and jewelry with bolder, more geometric shapes. The black adds real contrast, and the harder lines give the whole outfit an edgier feel. A direct contrast to the pearls and lighter colors from the previous look — again, same base outfit.
Outfit four: a playful accent
Last one, for fun: red sneakers, a red bag, a cherry-print scarf, and earrings with a small heart accent. The red does all the work — the outfit goes from basic to playful and a little whimsical just from the accessories.
Four looks. One sweater. One pair of jeans. No new clothes.
That’s the whole point of this exercise: accessories finish an outfit, but they can also define it. And once you see it done once, you’ll probably never stop doing it.
How to build an accessory collection that actually works for you
Now that you’ve seen what’s possible, here’s how I’d build the collection in two groups. First, your everyday go-to pieces — the stuff that finishes outfits on zero-effort mornings. Second, if you want to play, statement pieces in different colors, shapes, and textures that let you change the direction of a look.
Start here: the everyday starter kit
If you don’t have a few accessories you already love reaching for, start here. The rule I use: one to two go-to pieces for every part of your life you actually dress for. That means one or two everyday pieces, one or two for athleisure, one or two for work, and one or two for dressier occasions.
Some pieces do double duty — a necklace that works for casual, work, and a dinner out is even better. The point is that when you’re out the door in four minutes, there’s always something that finishes the outfit.
My actual go-to list, for what it’s worth:
- Simple hoop earrings. They work with everything from athleisure to dressy, they’re lightweight, and they don’t irritate sensitive ears. I wear the 30mm version, and they’re an easy $11–$13 — my favorite thing about them is that you can wear them constantly without them feeling like a decision.
- A short pendant necklace in a neutral tone. This is the piece I reach for more than any other. There’s a version in black that I actually wear the most — it adds a subtle pop to any outfit with black in it — and a white version that keeps things lighter. The black one is the quiet workhorse of my closet. You can get 20% off with code TAKE20 if you want to try a pair.
- A lightweight statement earring. I gave up on statement earrings for years because most of them dragged my ears down by noon. The brand I’ve worn for 10+ years makes them in leather that looks metallic, comes in colors like champagne satin, silver, and vintage bronze, and is light enough that I’ve honestly napped in them. When I want more impact than small hoops, this is the move.
- One statement necklace. For dressier outfits, when I want something more than earrings alone. Mine is old and no longer available, but honestly, these days the short pendants do 90% of the work.
Expand when you want variety
If your everyday pieces are covered and you want to change the feel of your outfits, this is where it gets fun. A few directions that change a look the most:
- Statement earrings or necklaces in different shapes and materials. A chunky necklace gives a completely different feel than a delicate one.
- Colorful or printed scarves. The easiest way to add color, pattern, or a different vibe to an outfit in one move.
- Belts with different buckles and textures. They change the look of jeans, pants, and dresses without changing the clothes.
- A structured bag and a soft one. A structured black bag feels different from a soft, colorful one — and both go with a lot of your outfits.
- Different shoe styles. Sneakers, loafers, and flats send an outfit in completely different directions.
You don’t need all of these. A few pieces that are different from your usual go-tos will multiply the looks you already have — and one new accessory can work with a lot of different outfits, which makes it an easy buy.
Try it on your own clothes
Here’s your turn. Pick one basic outfit from your closet — a tee and jeans, a plain dress, whatever you reach for most — and restyle it just by changing the shoes, jewelry, bag, or a scarf. If you want to go further, add a jacket or another layer on top and see how the whole thing shifts.
If you need a few new pieces first, start with the everyday kit above before you jump into statement pieces. The finishing pieces are the ones you’ll wear daily.
Do I need to buy a lot of accessories to change up my outfits?
No. Two or three well-chosen pieces — a simple earring, a pendant necklace, a scarf — are enough to finish an outfit every day. Statement pieces are for variety, not necessity.
What accessories make an outfit look more polished the fastest?
Earrings and a necklace. They’re the fastest way to take a plain outfit from fine to put-together, and they don’t take up any closet space.
Can accessories really change the vibe of an outfit?
Yes — that’s the whole point of the four-look demo above. Warm, textured, and colorful accessories make an outfit feel earthy and relaxed; soft, delicate ones make it romantic; darker, sharper ones make it edgier.
A note from Ava: The trick I keep coming back to is that accessories aren’t an extra step — they’re the part of getting dressed where the outfit actually happens. Once you start seeing them that way, a five-piece rotation stops feeling small.
